What is Umrah?
In Shariah Law, Umrah comprises placing your intention at the Miqat to be in the state of Ihram, performing Tawaf of the Kaaba, doing Sa’i between Safa and Marwah, and carrying out Halq (shaving) or Taqsir (shortening) of the hair.
1
Entering Ihram:
Before crossing the Miqat (a place at a certain distance from Makkah, beyond which it is not permissible for any Muslim intending to perform Hajj or ‘Umrah to pass without being in a state of Ihram), one must declare their intention and chant the Talbiyah.
2
Ihram for Men
Men are required to wear two pieces of unstitched white cloth, ensuring that one piece covers the lower half of the body and the other is wrapped around the upper body. Stitched clothing, covering the head, and wearing shoes or socks are prohibited.
3
Ihram for Women
Women must wear ordinary but loose and non-transparent clothes that cover the entire body except for the face and hands. Wearing Niqab (face cover) and gloves is not allowed.
UMRAH
Preparation
1
Ihram/Intention at Miqat
Declare the intention for Umrah and begin chanting the Talbiyah as you approach the holy precincts of Makkah.
2
Tawaf
Upon reaching the Masjid al-Haram, perform Tawaf, which involves circumambulating the Kaaba seven times in a counter-clockwise direction. Men are required to keep their right shoulder uncovered (Idtiba’a) during Tawaf.
3
Sa'i between Safa and Marwah
After Tawaf, perform Sa'i by walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah, starting at Safa and ending at Marwah
4
Halq or Taqsir (Exiting the State of Ihram)
Complete the Umrah by either shaving the head (Halq) or trimming the hair (Taqsir). Men typically shave their heads, while women trim a small portion of their hair.

Important Things to Note During Umrah
Prohibitions in Ihram
Avoid applying perfume, clipping nails, or cutting hair. Hunting animals, engaging in marital relations, conducting marriage proposals or ceremonies, and covering the head (for men) or the face (for women) are also prohibited.
Behavior in Masjid al-Haram
Maintain the utmost respect within the Masjid al-Haram. Pilgrims should avoid loud conversations, eating or drinking in the circumambulation area (Mataf), and running or pushing during the Tawaf and Sa'i. Acts of worship should be conducted with sincerity and tranquility.
Environmental Respect
Pilgrims are encouraged to maintain cleanliness, not harm any living creature, not pluck any plants, and keep the holy sites free of litter and graffiti.
Health Precautions
Given the physical nature of some rituals, it's advisable to prepare physically for Umrah by being in good health, staying hydrated, and being mindful of the climatic conditions in Makkah.
